Dear Learners,
Education is more than just gaining knowledge and skills; it’s about growing into the person you want to become. One of the most important qualities that supports this journey is self-determination.
Self-determination is about making your own choices and setting goals that reflect your personal values and aspirations. Your success in both your studies and career begins with believing in your ability to shape your own future.
Promoting your clients’ self-determination is a fundamental part of working in counselling and community services. People are more likely to feel motivated and capable of making positive choices when they believe they have control over their own goals and decisions.
It is important to satisfy the following psychological needs when strengthening self-determination:
- Autonomy: supporting clients to feel in control of their own behaviours and goals encourages them to develop the self-determination needed to make meaningful, positive changes
- Competence: involves mastering and feeling confident in your abilities. Clients are more likely to take steps towards achieving their goals when they believe they have the skills necessary for success
- Connection: all people need to feel connected to others and experience a sense of belonging. A strong relationship with your clients can help them feel valued and welcomed, which can have major impacts on their ability to achieve long-term success
Remember, you are the key driver of your progress. By taking initiative and staying committed, you’re not just completing a course, but building a future that reflects your goals and determination.
Happy Friday, and keep believing in your ability to succeed!
